Excursions on Lake GenevaLake Geneva is unique in several respects. It is the largest lake in Europe. And the ships which ply its waters include a number of historic vessels dating back to the 19th century. These are ships which have been lovingly restored to their original condition based on the old construction plans. Together they represent an impressive shipping fleet and a rare cultural heritage. The aim of "Léman Tradition" (Léman is the French name for Lake Geneva) is to introduce visitors and local residents alike to these ancient sailing vessels and, for one week during the summer season, to present an attractive programme of cruises and regattas. Theme CruisesDuring "Léman Tradition", five vessels - the Neptune, Vaudoise, Savoie, Aurore and La Liberté - will operate daily cruises from Vevey, la Tour de Peilz, Clarens and Montreux. Each cruise is dedicated to a specific theme and lasts from three to six hours. Destinations are Le Bouveret (renowned for its miniature railway pleasure park), the Old Rhone (a nature protected area), St.-Gingolph (boat museum), Lavaux (famous for its fine wine), and Château de Chillon (rich in medieval history). Regatta of Old BoatsThe Regatta of Old Boats is an annual spectacle which takes place during the last weekend of July in the picturesque port of La Tour de Peilz. The event - which brings together some 100 pre-1956 vessels - is a "must" for sailing enthusiasts and never fails to fascinate. The 2002 Regatta of Old Boats will be integrated into the "Léman Tradition" programme, which is being held this year for the first time. The public will be offered a rare opportunity to board and sail on historic vessels. |
